CVA 1184-2769 – Police officer, pedestrians, and traffic, according to CVA on Cambie Street near 12th Avenue — but I believe it is actually on the 2200 block of Main St. near 6th Ave. Jack Lindsay, 1948?

This is a photograph which I believe has been misidentified by CVA. The City of Vancouver Archives identifies this scene as being on Cambie Street near 12th Avenue. But in fact, I believe it is the 2200 block of Main Street, near 6th Avenue.

Why do I make this claim? My principal sources were BC Directories. My first clue that there might be a problem with this being Cambie Street was that I couldn’t find the businesses identifiable in the image to be on Cambie near 12th Avenue. I then began looking for the names of the businesses (instead of the street), and found pretty quickly that the businesses in the image were on Main near 6th. Then I began to look more closely at the brick building in the background/right of the image and concluded that this was the Ashnola Apartment block (1912-13) at 203 E 6th Ave. That cinched it. All evidence pointed to this scene being on Main near 6th — just a couple of blocks north of where Kingsway meets Main. (Another clue that the location wasn’t Cambie is the Main St trolley in the photo).
