The image above is one of my all-time favourites of Stuart Thomson images (of many made by this consummate pro with a decidedly uncommon eye). I love how he has well captured human feelings and attitudes in this little interior scene: the woman on the left who appears to have bitten into something sour, but given the camera’s presence, does not want to spit it out; the guy mid-way down on the right who looks utterly bored by the whole thing; the slightly hostile female clerk at the till who appears to be less than thrilled to be serving policemen; and the stolid appearance of a ‘service-first’ attitude on the face of the face of the decidedly non-white server behind the pie counter at a joint called (not without racist undertones) White Lunch.
